The Vyathaka Puranas

Indian Mythology with a Twist

The Vyathaka Puranas is an anthology of fantasy flash fiction based on Indian mythology, instead of the Judeo-Christian or Greek/Roman myths we generally see in most fantasy fiction.

Mostly, this grew out of a lingering dissatisfaction with the 5th season Supernatural episode, (‘Hammer of the Gods’), and the way Indian mythology/religion (or indeed, non Judeo-Christian religion/myth) was treated in the overall story arc (Seasons 1-5).

And, well, one piece of writing advice I keep seeing is: write what you would like to read.

So here it is.

The Vyathaka Puranas – where classic legends get revamped.

I use a lot of Indian concepts in these stories, I have added mouseover translations and explanations for most of them (like the title itself – go on, place your mouse over ‘vyathaka’). Anything you want to discuss, feel free to drop me a line.

New story out every Friday. Like my page on Facebook to keep track of each story as it is published!

All constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. As are comments, compliments, general squee, and linkage.

All fiction here is ©SSK. Feel free to share or link, though!

By the Numbers

When I got home, my mother was crying.

Not just crying, but weeping. Weeping as if her heart would break.

As I moved my purse to my left  hand so I could close the door behind me, I wondered what could have happened to make my mother react...Show me more…

Heart of Stone

Sriram was sixteen when he found out he was related to one of the most famous criminals of his time.

He’d just started getting a light fuzz on his upper lip, and though his classmates teased him, there was envy behind their words, as well.  As he...Show me more…

Greatly Exaggerated

The whistle blew.

Dripping sweat, the young man looked up. Perspiration ran into his eyes, and his work out clothes were stuck to his body. He didn’t gasp, though, his breaths coming deep and even. He assumed an ‘at-ease’ position, hands clasped behind his back as he awaited...Show me more…

The video narrative is interesting Sudha. The plot is intriguing coz… So many stories to be unveiled from the indian mythology. Can’t but appreciate your source and idea. The style is definitely entertaining….as it should be. Good work.

Thank you so much, ma’am! =) Your kind words mean a lot to me.

I’ve slowly gotten annoyed with the fantasy books and films we see nowadays, either it’s all knights and kings of a quasi European kingdom, or vampires and werewolves running around howling/loving/snarling at humans. You even see all this creativity devoted to retelling of classic European fairy tales like ‘Red Riding Hood’ or ‘Snow White’ – three movies already out on the same two stories – and I wished someone would do a retelling of some of our own legends and myths.

And, like I said, I’ve always heard that you should write what you would want to read. I’m so glad you liked the idea. I’m looking forward to your comments on the stories themselves, a new one is out every Friday.

I’m glad you liked the trailer (as such). In these days of book trailers, I thought it was a fun thing to do. =)

S, I know you sent this to me on FB ages ago, but I marked it as “Watch later” and promptly forgot about it. I didn’t realize that this was an intro to the stories you’ve been posting. I love the execution!
